Not the Favorite Child

I probably won’t get the “Favorite Child” award.

I am ok with that because it means that I’ve pushed my parents into thinking about uncomfortable topics.

My parents had their will and end-of-life documents completed awhile ago.

But, things changed when my brother, the executor began having som his own health issues.

Which prompted me to have the conversation that, likely, took me out of the “Favorite Child” spot.

Life is constantly changing, much like the residents in a nursing facility.

Residents are living longer while sicker and needing more nursing care.

The OIG’s ISPG for Nursing Facilities recommends a system to thoroughly evaluate potential new residents prior to admission to ensure their needs will be met:

o   Clinical evaluation

o   Social assessment

o   Behavioral information

o   Current and foreseeable plans of care

o   Facility capabilities

Let’s talk about the uncomfortable topics:

→ What is your facility’s pre-admission process to evaluate the needs of the new resident?

→ How do you help your staff meet those needs: annual education? Just-in-time education?

I’m not getting the “Favorite Child” award from my parents because I’m pushing them to think about uncomfortable, but necessary, topics.
