Because I said so...

"Because I said so" isn't good enough.

Not for my newly-turned-10-year-old.

Not for your nursing facility team either.

My son recently questioned why he needed to wash up for dinner after helping on the farm. I could have pulled out the classic Gen X parenting card I inherited from my Boomer parents.

Instead, I gave him context.

Clean skin. No bacteria. Simple WHY. Problem solved.

Here's where compliance comes in:

The OIG's Nursing Facility Compliance Program Guidance identifies "Appropriate Resident Care Plans and Resident Activities" as a key compliance risk.

But telling your team "the OIG said so" isn't going to magically improve care planning.

They need the WHY.

Here it is:

Insufficient care plans and activities don't just affect resident well-being and safety — they can lead to false claims and government enforcement actions.

Translation: This isn't paperwork for paperwork's sake. This is protection for your residents AND your organization.

The good news? I'd bet you're already doing this work. The question is whether your documentation is accurately capturing it.

Because during an audit or a survey, if it isn't documented, it didn't happen.

→ Are your care plans truly interdisciplinary?

→ Are they resident-specific, not templated?

→ Is your team capturing the work they're already doing?
